Connect to Art and change in Northern Ireland
Another year another degree show the urge to keep on creating just does not stop. I took a second and third look around the Degree and MFA shows last week and was particularly impressed by the Ceramics and Photography. All the photography seemed to have a strange stillness in it. I wonder if it's a trend? Leonardo De Vinchi 's at The Ulster Museum was well attended on the first day. Although the 10 pieces are small there is something of the immediacy of drawing that takes you back directly to the view of the artist. Tobias Sternberg has been working hard at Ps2 although he got off to a slow start the momentum has been building over the time he has been open. He is our artist of the week this week and his dealing with broken objects and turning them into well considered small sculptures does help us all questions the values in Art. He has been captured in two short videos by Text Film where you can see the before and after objects so if you cant get down to see him catch up with what he has been doing online.
Cathedral studios opened their pop up gallery in Royal Aveune with four of their artists, Lisa Ballard, Diana Hadden, John McCormac and Kevin Millar .Those who braved the rainy evening were rewarded with a variety of art, cupcakes and some very nice shortbread with strawberries and cream. Shannon Lee sound piece Recovery at ADF, takes the listener into another zone. To listen to the piece you have to lie on a hospital bed and over six minutes the sound coming into you head via the head phones takes you on an aural tour of what it felt like to go from well being to diagnosis to eventual recovered of a brain trauma. It is Shannon's hope that the piece could be used for doctors and health professionals to help them realize what it actually feels like to go through such an experience. I must say there was a strange feeling of having someone take over your though processes while listening to it.
But what is coming to an end over the next couple of weeks?

It nice to see more tourists about Belfast, long may it continue. I have become really interested in my google analytics the top nine country's that view the site are UK, Ireland, US, Spain, Canada, Germany, Australia, France and South Korea. Hello South Korea.;-) The top 10 city's are Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Leighton Buzzard, Dublin, Liverpool, York and Preston. Quite amazing really who find this all interesting. As I said before I'm researching how to expand the site so if asked do throw you 2p's worth in. Ards community art network are meeting again on the 23rd if you live in the area and are interested in getting involved the contact details are on the site. The refound building is getting painted and ready for some more interesting projects, galleries are slowing down for the summer season and I'm off to Inishlacken soon for an artists residency organized by Rosie Mcgurran, so if you never hear from me again you will know what direction I went off into. The RUA forum post has been fermenting again and so life goes on.
