A tribute to Picasso by Gerry Gleason at Red Barn Gallery

May 2, 2013 to May 19, 2013
Echoes from HistoryI have selected the period 1933-1946 from the vast body of Picasso’s work. This period for me covers the turbulent times that took place in the 20th century world history and in Picasso’s own complex private life. I feel that both of these forces fed into Picasso’s work of that period. The Wall Street Crash had occurred in Oct of 1929 with the collapse of stocks and shares and the smaller banks did not have the funds to cope with the huge demand for withdrawals. The world economies were plunged into what would be called the great depression the effects which would last for a decade. During this period the world experienced the rise of extreme political forces. Where as in the past Picasso had been at the forefront of many of modern art’s experimental endeavours such as cubism, I feel he turned his attentions in this period to world events that were unfolding around him. We start to see this unease increase in the Vollard Suite particularly the Minotaur sequence. Art…See More

Saturday Evening Post - A Celebration of this iconic magazine at Red Barn Gallery

April 15, 2013 to April 23, 2013
This exhibition allows you to enjoy a magazine that at one time was the most widely read in the USA. It was first issued in 1821 but there is a claim it has a connection all the way back to Benjamin Franklin s' 'Pennsylvania Gazette' published in 1728.'The Post' published current affairs, articles on humour, poetry, illustrations and a famous letters column.Contributors included F. Scott Fitzgerald, C.S. Forester, Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe and John Steinbeck. 'The Post' achieved a deserved reputation for its many innovative illustrations and one significant example of this was Norman Rockwell who joined the magazine when just 22 years old and continued a partnership with 'The Post' for 50 years. You will see some examples of his work in the exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Raymond O'Regan, lecturer in Irish history at Queen's University, Belfast.See More

'Past upon Past' by Maj Hasager at Red Barn Gallery

March 7, 2013 to April 11, 2013
'IDENTITY & PLACES'  Identity & Places is a collaboration between Folktown CIC, PLACE and Red Barn Gallery, and working in partnership with the Cities of Memory conference at Queen's University Belfast. Identity & Places is both a physical and an online platform for discussion, and this is the first series of events to take place in Belfast City Centre. Identity & Places is a platform for discussion which challenges us to examine who we are and how our identities are interlinked with our surroundings. Through a series of events using art in various forms we are creating a catalyst for discussing topics around identity that are not always easy to address. Local and international artists and 'urban activists' takes us on different journeys, some very personal, from the past to the present, allowing us to shed skin, and possibly come face to face with ourselves in preparation for the future. Others will ignite curiosity and engage us in a discussion about the future…See More

Bacon, Butter and Belfast at Red Barn Gallery

February 7, 2013 to February 28, 2013
Bacon, Butter & BelfastA perspective of East Belfast The Belfast Photo Festival is Northern Ireland’s premier visual arts festival and the photographic biennial for the island of Ireland.  Belfast Photo Festival seeks to promote the photographic language by underlining its crucial importance in our visual culture through education workshops, alongside community based events.  In 2012 the Festival worked alongside Engage With Age to create Photography and Storytelling workshops for the older community in East Belfast, funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.  By combining storytelling techniques with photography the workshops aimed to capture participants sense of place, through re-telling stories and taking photographs. Professional photographer Jim Maginn and storyteller Willie Drennan ran the workshops over ten weeks with eleven participants.“It was also clear from the off-set that these people possessed a wealth of social lore and understood the nuances and subtle…See More
