Artist Statement
The core of my practice explores contemporary drawing themes centred around the aesthetics of kitsch. The drawings combine influences from travel, social situations, iconography, myths, legends and museum categorisation. I collect stories, histories, grandmother’s tales, bedtime stories, hearsay and sagas. I gather images, objects, photographs, books, icons, scribbles, and objects from the street. I create constructions, installations, photomontages, theatrical events and drawings. The drawings can take the form of large-scale semi translucent, layered, paper, window and illuminated drawing pieces. The window pieces take in the influences from the country, location, local stories and incorporate the view within and outside of the window. Each window drawing is site-specific and unique; they invite the viewer to decipher connections and narrative elements with the outer space and the chosen icons. The illuminated pieces are laser engraved Perspex drawings connected to neon tubes which illuminate the engraved image. Theatrical events range from live drawing with story telling, to more public interaction pieces. Story telling drawings will have accompanying text or sound, and available on my website.
