Loci of Memory at Ards Arts Centre

March 1, 2012 at 7pm to March 31, 2012 at 9pm
Loci of memory is concerned with the preservation of memory within spatial environments, enabling the retention, recovery and [re] telling of individual and collective memory. This work is concerned with the exploration of the personal Loci of Memory of the artist. Utilising process and form to explore internal fragments of individual memories. And realising these in an external form using the languages of sculpture, image and sound.Loci of Memory An exhibition by Alice Burns Sunburst Gallery…See More

JAN MCNEILL [Artist Statement]

My practice has evolved through many materials and forms but continues to manifest itself as installation, photography or sculpture, sometimes a mixture of all three.

Accidental happenings often take centre stage, and at times even become the main artwork.

My work often has a political edge to it, drawing the viewer in and setting up a discursive opportunity, which is incomplete without their interaction.

The dialogue dictates, suggests and presents the viewer with questions all simultaneously and jousts for their attention. Access is controlled and barriers created both physically and metaphorically in the work creating a tension of what perception, reality and truth are and questioning if such things exist.

Non-traditional materials are key to my practice but ultimately the work dictates the material.

There is also a strong sense of formal structures juxtaposed with random or chaotic elements.

Rarely is photography the final form and more often takes the backseat of documenting the process.

An element of performance exists within my practice but is contained in the sculptural process.

Currently, I have become intrigued by language and although language ideology is a relatively new dimension to the work, it is one I have investigated in this current work A Play On Words (2011).

My intention with A Play On Words was to bring a sense of lived experience of language within a quiet subtle space.

This echoes a desire to make work that creates an intimate, reflective space leaving a residue of lived experience within the viewer long after they have departed.
