Permalink Reply by Ben Allen on December 6, 2011 at 10:43 When the M.A. kicked off in Belfast many students from Glasgow school of art came over to Belfast.
I think they were all taught to be amazing as many are now high profile working artists and quite a few were nominated for the turner prize including Christine Borland.
Before artist run gallery / group Catalyst there was Transmission Gallery in Glasgow, so the ever changing management were these art superstars in the making .
Mark Pawson & myself proposed & got an exhibition at transmission & i then lived in Glasgow for a few months & this involved a lot of drinking , street market hunting, nightclubbing (Sub Club) socialising & exhibitions in peoples houses.
I looked after the gallery show a few days a week & on my day off a TV film crew filmed a rock group playing using our work as a backdrop, may have been Franz Ferdinand ? I missed the entire thing! This was in the days before mobile phones !!!
Martin Boyce & Ross Sinclair were part of this scene & wanted to be doing what Mark & I were doing & Later Ross, Mark and myself had a show in Catalyst when it was upstairs in exchange place, it was called Art Zombies, i got to design the poster which was printed by Ross & then pasted up all over Belfast, we covered the floor walls and ceiling with stencil t - shirts spray painted umbrellas, skateboards, junk sculpture , photo copy art and big screen prints on tarpaulin, one of which was of Bobby sands which was sold to a lady who once went out with him !
Another notable group show at Transmission was The Festival of Plagiarism, where i met sex Pistols designer Jamie Reid, for this show i travelled to Glasgow on my motorbike which was parked in the gallery for the duration, a few visitors said it was the best "art piece" !
