NI-wide arts magazine/journal/newsletter?

Anyone interested in meeting to think aloud about forming a plan of action to create a regular, NI-wide arts news/features/reviews magazine/journal/newsletter?

The aim would be to create something that reflects the breadth and diversity of work in the region, with the editorial tone aiming to be intelligent and accessible.

Michael, I take it you know about the Art paper? you might lke to ask Critical bastards they are on here.

Michael did you mean u missed the art paper.
.?
Michael next to answer the forum questions just underneath the queries so it's easier to follow . Yes it was a freebie but it only ran for one issue.

i did miss the one issue of the Art Paper. What was the consensus about why it failed?

absolutely! Would certainly meet to discuss this idea etc :)

Why the art paper failed. .? Anyone want to give an opinion. I think part of the difficulty is the business model, what is actually going to pay for it., ? art is so subjective and many people are not willing to really involve themselves in criticism in the traditional sense because as small. Personally I believe part of the reason the paper failed was that there was an usumption by the owners that art works the same way as music and it does not. it a whole other story. some of its articles we're more about pr than anything and we have enough of that s*** going on already.

M. great idea, also something to think about...what about embedding the material into CCNI site as a Critical blog.As I know funding for a hard copy model is hard to get these days and a virtual blog maybe a way to kick off some interesting interaction. I would be up for submitting/contributing ref anything moving image/sonically related. Good luck

Magazines and periodicals of special interest have a long history of "failing" here and elsewhere. The only way to guarantee continuing publications is to sell advertising - and LOTS of it. That , I know , wil piss some people off before it even starts. Buts its a fact of life. And the first issues are the hardest to sell as potential clients will have nothing to see and no idea of circulation or readership, they have to take your word. Its a full time, thankless, job for a salesperson.

An alternative, now we have the technology, is to produce a Newspaper, laid out in pages as a Newspaper, no bigger than A4, and allow folk to download and print it out themselves if they really want a "hard copy"...free?

Hi Michael, yes I'd love to meet and talk about this possibility. I think there are all kinds of problems but that shouldn't put us off - yet;-)

I edited and published three arts magazines between the late '80s and the mid '00s so have a bit of experience where business models and advertising and so on are concerned.

Please let me know if any kind of meeting is setup. Best to contact me through my email address: davidhughes19 [at] btinternet [dot] com.

Best wishes

David Hughes
