Art in the Eastside - Call for Submissions

Event Description

This is an exciting high profile public art programme run by Creative Exchange and is our showcase event of the year. Art in the Eastside III will form one of the largest outdoor exhibitions to be delivered in Belfast. It will also be the main visual arts highlight as part of the inaugural East Belfast Arts festival. Collectively it will create an outdoor gallery of images in the heart of East Belfast and will bring art directly to the people in the east of the city. The outdoor exhibition will also be accessed to those travelling the main arterial routes in and out of the city centre.

26 billboard images, across East Belfast during September 2012

Visual arts highlight of the East Belfast Arts Festival

All proposals submitted will form part of an on-line exhibition

Bus tours will operate on Thursday 6th September as part of the BCC Late Night Art

Postcards will be produced of the billboards (subject to funding).

A minimum of 11 of the Billboards will be from selected artists from open submission.

The panel will comprise of the following. One Member of Creative Exchange, one project sponsor, a non-exhibiting artist.  A chair for the selection process will be appointed by the panel.

Panel members will be not be informed of the artist’s name when they are viewing the work in case it leads to any bias.

The panel will also be instructed that whilst this is a contemporary visual arts project it is also a public art project. Therefore, any artwork which may be considered offensive to the public or considered to be of politically sensitive will not be put forward for selection. This decision will be considered final.

The panel will be asked to judge the competition on the following criteria:

  • Quality of artwork                                          10points
  • Relevance to East Belfast                              10 points
  • Suitability for Billboard production               10 points

In the event of the artists receiving joint scores, discretion of selection will be through panel moderation. The work proposed for Art In the Eastside III must have site–specific relevance. Images are required to reflect an essence of the east of the city, which can be adopted by any of the five expressive themes.
